… it’s a mood-sketch I dropped for the development of a new artwork … sometimes I do dozens of them over a range of months before I paint the final piece at least.

I like to focus visual aspects of characters to characterize them better … a good character goes deep, but he has just only a few visual balance points.

Sometimes showing less of a character or creature is more characterizing than the massive use of details … I guess, this is the only way to design really scary things.

When a character has to be designed, who will later be assigned by a real actor like in a movie project, I tend to work rather impressively while trying to give the director and the actor the “soul” of a role. I think in this case it is more important to understand a character on another level under the surface of a simple design.

For concept art it is a practicable approach to take natural or historical designs and just make a rearrangement of some of the elements … strictly speaking in this case we do not talk about designing. This process is called styling …

I love designing water-creatures because of their freedom in physics and function … they can be designed much more stranger and bizarre than creatures on ground or in the air, while still staying believable for us.

Making a believable but in a way amazing design often seems to be the quadrature of the circle … I just tease out a very grotesque situation or character and try to bring it down to earth somehow. – By the way, I am a sucker for the old ancient tales ;) …

I love bizarre characters going much deeper than the standard hero or some kind of sex-archetype … good chars have to tell me a story and visual nature must follow the function in it. That way a character is piece of a puzzle of an authentic and emotional narration.
